Muttermund was born from that truth.

I did not come to birth work from a spiritual path and then find my way into the clinical world. I came from the clinical world — twenty years at the bedside, eight of them inside one of the most respected labor and delivery units in the country — and the ancestral wisdom found me there. In the fluorescent light. In the middle of the hardest moments. In the quiet space between a contraction ending and the next one beginning.

That is where I learned that the two worlds were never actually separate. They had just been taught to us that way.

You are not broken. You are not behind. You are not too much or not enough for this. Everything you need to birth this baby is already inside you. The strength is there. The endurance is there. The resilience is there. It has been passed down through every woman in your lineage who did this before you — and even if they are not physically in the room with you, they are with you. Literally. In every cell of your body. Your grandmothers are in your bones. Your lineage is in your blood. You have never been doing this alone.

We come to your birth space ready to hold all of it. The woman whose birth plan changed and who needs someone to help her nervous system stay regulated in a hospital room she never planned to be in. The woman who is barefoot at home, trusting her body, and needs the kind of support that knows when to speak and when to simply be present. The woman who has done all the research, read all the books, and still needs someone in the room who has been there hundreds of times and will not flinch.

We are that presence. In every room. In every plan. In every unexpected turn.

We advocate when you cannot speak. We hold when you cannot stand. We sing when words are not enough. We guard your birth space like the sacred ground it is.

Muttermund means cervix. The mouth of the mother. The opening through which all life passes. We chose this name because birth begins there — in the body, in the knowing, in the opening that does not happen by force but by surrender. By trust. By the kind of deep remembering that cannot be taught but can absolutely be witnessed and held.
